Social Media Experiment for the 2008 Election

Anyone else out there frustrated with the media bias of the presidential campaigns? Tired of hearing people regurgitate the spin they’re fed, and worrying that they’ll really vote based on it? Wonder why there isn’t an easier way for voters to educate themselves?

We can’t let the speech writers, spin, news, blogs, and rumor mill determine who is chosen for president.

I’d like to build a site that will serve to educate voters about where candidates stand on specific issues, provide information to either confirm or refute the claims made, and allow the voters to see how the candidate’s promises will truly affect them personally. It could include a questionnaire to find out where they stand on the issues and how each candidate’s policies will affect them personally, both economically and socially. It would be a strictly non-partisan effort, and I’m looking for volunteers to help out. The more people that get involved, the more we can divide and conquer and make a difference.

I’d like to see how quickly we could bring together a matrixed team to build a website that will help the American people make a more informed decision for president. I realize that there are sites that have some of these elements out there, such as procon.org, selectsmart.com, dontvote.org, pew etc, but I don’t feel that any of them tie it all together in a way that compels people to get the facts. The site should be fun or engaging in some way, with a possible viral streak (think JibJab). I would like it to be easy to use and have a great user experience. If there’s anything like this out there that I don’t know of, let me know!

Anyone interested in joining this effort, please contact me. I’d like to pull together a team to begin working on this in the next week or so. With enough people, we can get this developed, or at least rolling with some great momentum, in a weekend. With successes like Air events, Startup weekend, and BarCamp I know it’s possible! We can meet virtually as well as in person in San Antonio and can have people call in via Adobe Connect.

Once it’s built, I’d like to use the power of social networks, word of mouth, and internet marketing to see if we can get lots of traffic to it!

Politifact is pretty good as well.

This is a good thing you’re starting.

Here is a tool I found that may help the effort ; http://spinspotter.com/home. I just heard about it in Twitter, haven’t even tried it out yet but I saw what you were doing and was just wanting to help! I would love to assist with developing the concept into a user friendly but interesting form to have people not only come in but share with their friends.

I am of course very engaged in this campaign as I have been since the 2000 and 2004 and 2006 campaigns. I have also been thinking about how to break through the clutter to reach the electorate. My strategic goal is the prevention of another Republican regime in the White House and to lengthen the coat tails of Obama in order to effect a mentality change in the Legislature. There is much important work to be done to bring us back to sanity in our country’s fiscal and political management, public policy and world view. Lack of awareness is the source of the danger to our freedom. How to affect this on a scale to make a difference as well as creating an approach that will reach a swath of the electorate is somewhat daunting; but I do think a direct and practical strategy is all we have time to do. The building of the framework is all important so that the work of many can be focused onto a common mission. The simpler the better. I can help in framing that.

So here are a few ideas:

Compare the programs of McCain and Obama on several variables: as against an agreed upon listing of the major difficulties many currently face –lack of or decreasing money to afford adequate food, clothing and shelter, health care, child care, quality education, job related expenses, Lack of job opportunities etc. A very brief tag line associated with each difficulty–such as oneliners about # of children who go to bed hungry , # of families without jobs, working poor, # of homeless families, ect. Compare
how each candidate addresses these problems( if at all) That is what is being proposed and how will it change your life for the better?

Then a similar chart for major national concerns that will affect your children and grandchildren if not addressed. ie national debt, personal debt , our relationships with other countries, management of very costly wars and strained military, national security energy needs, climate changes, social security, pensions and retirement, etc…

Point out who does not address or inadequately addresses them. In this way a user can formulate her own questions for the candidates.

Perhaps another section of the comparison can be about governing philosophy, principles and values.

This comparison can responded to by the community of users.

Fact checking is worth doing but really is not that effective after the fact. It must be immediate. All the lies and half truths that Mac is putting out about Obama is a strategy to control the news cycles. They put so many out day by day the more bizarre they are the better for media to pick them up and dominate the national discussion. The media is complicit wittingly or unwittingly. I am giving thought to how we might be able to be a step ahead of the Rovian chess game being played with the media.

Ok I will assist as is relevant. A meeting of the core would be ideal but not always possible. I am willing! I will be leaving for Las Vegas on 9-24 and back on 9-27. Other than that I am free. I am studying the Film 21 and have tickets to see Bette Midler. Come join me at the Bellagio. Love joy
